KUALA LUMPUR: Olympic and world champion Taufik Hidayat was the centre of attraction when he turned up unannounced at the Kuala Lumpur Badminton Stadium to watch the men's singles final between Lee Chong Wei and Mohd Hafiz Hashim.

Taufik's presence here in Malaysia raised the possibility that he could soon be joining the KL Racket Club (KLRC), owned by Datuk Andrew Kam Tai Yeow.

While not denying that professional outfit KL Racket Club had made him an offer, Taufik said no decision has been made yet.

''Datuk Andrew is a good friend of mine and I came here for a holiday.''

''I like Malaysia and usually try to come when he invites me. There has been talks but nothing is finalised,'' said Taufik, who retained his Asian Games singles gold medal when he beat world number one Lin Dan of China in the final in Doha recently.

The KLRC, formed in June last year, have become a platform for dropouts from the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) to revive their badminton careers.

Some of their top players are former internationals Sairul Amar Ayob, Lee Tsuen Seng, Ismail Saman, Joanne Quay, Lim Pek Siah, Chor Hooi Yee, Ang Li Peng and M. Sutheaswari.

England's current number one player Andrew Smith is also under KLRC's payroll. (thestar.com.my)
