Malaysians make triple assault on titles

MAASPOORT (Holland): Veteran Malaysian mens doubles pair of Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah fought their way into the final of the Dutch Open badminton championships with a stunning win over Indonesias former world champions Tony Gunawan-Halim Haryanto here yesterday.

Tan Fook-Wan Wah defeated Tony-Halim, currently playing for the United States, 15-11, 10-15, 15-13 in the semi-finals and will meet Japans Tadashi Ohtsuka-Keita Masuda in todays final.

Teammates Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Lin Woon Fui had earlier gone down fighting 14-15, 15-10, 11-15 to the Japanese pair in the semi-finals.

Malaysias Mohd Hafiz Hashim is also just a match away from lifting his third World Grand Prix mens singles title for the year.

Hafiz, who won the Thailand and Swiss Opens earlier in the year, charged into the final of the Dutch Open with a 15-6, 15-5 win over Japans Sho Sasaki 15-6, 15-5 in just 30 minutes.

Hafiz will face second seed Shoji Sato of Japan in todays final, giving the Malaysian shuttler a chance to avenge his defeat to the latter in the third round of the All-England Open in March.

Sato defeated Dane Anders Boesen 15-11, 15-3 to book his place in the final.

Hafiz had defeated Denmarks Joachim Fischer 15-5, 15-10 while Sasaki had snuffed out the remaining Dutch hope fourth seed Dicky Palyama 10-15, 15-2, 15-11 in the quarter-finals on Friday.

Malaysia also have a chance to win a second title in the womens doubles competition today.

Top womens doubles pair Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty earned their second successive final appearance after prevailing 15-7, 15-11 over Aki Akao-Tomomi Matsuda of Japan in the semi-final.

Eei Hui-Pei Tty, who finished runners-up in the Indonesian Open last month, will take on Dutch pair Lotte Bruil-Mia Audina in their bid to win their first international title.

However, the Dutch pair will be no pushovers, having knocked out third seeds Kumiko Ogura-Reiko Shiota 15-13, 15-12 yesterday.

Tan Fook-Wan Wah had beaten Germanys Kristof Hopp-Ingo Kindervater 15-12, 15-8 while Mohd Fairuzizuan-Woon Fui defeated Englands Ian Palethorpe-Kristian Roebuck 15-9, 15-8 in the quarter-finals on Friday.

Mohd Fairuzizuan-Ooi Sock Ais gallant run in the mixed doubles competition ended when they were beaten 15-4, 11-15, 6-15 by Germanys Ingo Kindervater-Kathrin Piotrowski in the semi-finals yesterday.(The Star Online).
