KUCHING: With a place in the Project 2010-12 squad at stake, the juniors are expected to go the extra mile in the Proton Malaysian Open badminton championships starting today at the Stadium Perpaduan.

The Project's chief coach Rashid Sidek has decided to wield the axe and trim his current 30-member squad after the four-star Malaysian Open.

“This Malaysian Open is the last chance for some of these players – both boys and girls – to impress. I will drop some of the under-achievers,” said Rashid. “I have not decided on the number of players that will be dropped. But those dropped can be taken back if they prove themselves in other local tournaments,” he said.

Today, some of the interesting first round matches involving Rashid's charges will be between the Kedah Malaysian Games (Sukma) gold medallist Mohd Syafiq Jamaluddin and two-time Malaysian champion Lee Chong Wei; Mohd Hazwan Jamaluddin vs top seed Lin Dan of China; Liew Daren vs India's Anand Chetan; and Chong Wei Feng vs Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand.

Women's singles shuttler Anita Raj Kaur will take on China-born Pi Hongyan of France who won the Singapore Open crown on Sunday.(The Star Online)
