Chinese Taipei Badminton Open to kick off Tuesday

Taipei, The Yonex 2006 Chinese Taipei Badminton Open is scheduled to kick off Tuesday in Taipei, with more than 200 ace players from 20 countries and the host Taiwan participating.

The world men's singles champion, Lin Dan, and women's singles champion, Zhang Ning, both from China, are expected to take part in the open slated for June 20-25, according to the Chinese Taipei Badminton Association (CTBA).

Nine of the world's top ten women's singles players and five of the world's top ten men's singles players have registered to compete in the tournament which has prize money totaling US$170,000.

Among the ace women players expected to take part in the open are three Olympic gold medalists, two silver medalists and two bronze medal winners, CTBA officials said.

The winner of the 2006 Chinese Taipei Open men's singles title will receive US$13,600, while the women's singles winner will receive US$11,730, CTBA officials said.

Qualifying and preliminary rounds of the open are scheduled for June 20-22, while the quarterfinal, semifinal and championship matches are slated for June 23-25, the officials said.

The tournament will feature players from Austria, Bulgaria, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, the U.K., The Untied States, Vitetnam and Taiwan. (By Deborah Kuo)
