Asia still ahead in Asian-European badminton competition

MANILA, July 14 (Xinhuanet) -- Asian players shone at the three-day Asian-European badminton competition which ended here on Thursday.

In men's singles, world No.1 Lin Dan from China swept off the court by 15-2, 15-3, in a game with Germa ny's top-ranked player, Bjoern Joppienin, in the day two of the MVP Cup Asia versus Europe Badminton Championships on Wednesday night.

Lin's victory was the fourth in a row for Asia in its heads-on showdown with the top players from Europe.

Pi Hongyan, a Chinese playing for France, scored the first win for Europe through defeating Seo Yoon Hee of Korea with 11-4, 11-3, in just 29 minutes.

Europe's ladies' doubles pair of Gail Emms and Mia Audina Tjiptawan continued the victory of European team, defeating Thailand's Saralee Thungthongkam and Sathinee Chankrachangwong, 15-12, 15-8.

The First Manuel V. Pangilinan International Badminton Championships, or MVP Cup, provided the arena for 20 top players respectively from Asian and Europe, including China's Lin Dan, the world's No. 1 in men's singles; Indonesia's Taufik Hidayat, the world's No. 8 and the gold medalist in the 2004 Athens Olympics; Denmark's Anders Boesen, ranked 25th in the world; Mia Audina Tjiptawan, an Indonesian now playing for the Netherlands and is part of the European doubles champion.

Asia versus Europe is a first in badminton. It's a sport that Filipino can excel, and this is the best that we can offer. It's away of telling Filipinos they have the potential to be great in the sport, Pangilinan said at the launching of the tournament.

The biggest international badminton since the 2000 Asian championships is organized by the Philippine Badminton Association and the International Management Group.
