Singapore - The top seed Peter Gade of Denmark cruised through to the next round of the US$170,000 Aviva Open Singapore 2006 at the Indoor stadium.

He made it looked easy against Malaysian teenager Mohd Ariff Latiff 21-15,21-12 to set up a second round meeting against Germany’s Roman Spitko tonight.

Gade’s teammate Kenneth Jonassen, the second seed, also sailed through, beating another Malaysian Chan Kwong Beng 21-7,21-12 for a second round encounter against Roslin Hashim on Thursday June 8.

Jonassen, the losing quarter-finalist in the Indonesian Open, must surely be looking ahead to do well here simply because he was the winner in the 2004 edition.

‘It’s a good warm-up for me today. The tournament has attracted a strong field and it will get more difficult as the tournament wears on,” said Jonassen.

Chen Hong, China’s two-time winner here, also made it to the next round with an easy victory over Hsieh Yu-Hsing of Taipei 22-20,21-14.

“I am always happy to be playing in Singapore where the spectators have been nice to me. Hopefully I can win it a third time,” he said.

Singapore’s Ronald Susilo is also through, beating Malaysia’s Kuan Beng Hong, the No 5-8 seed 21-16,18-21,21-16 in their encounter last night.

Hafiz Hashim, the losing semi-finalist, two years ago also booked his place in the next round following his three-set win over China’s Qu Yianbo 17-21,21-8,21-6.

The Men’s Doubles threw up few surprises too as the seeded pairs led by the No. 1 Jesper Eriksen and Martin Lungaard coasted home comfortably in their opening round matches.

Malaysia’s Lee Wan Wah and Choong Tan Fook at No 2 also had it easy beating fellow Malaysians Goh Ying Jing and Abdul Rahman Razif 21-14,21-13.

The recent Indonesian Open runner-up Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan also made it to the next round with an win over Hendra Wijaya and Hendry Kurniawan in scores of 21-16,21-16. The Women’s Doubles top seed Yang Wei and Zhang Jiewen from China had a bye into the next round. They will be joined by the No. 2 seed Gails Emms and Donna Kellogg.

The No 3 seed Cheng Wen Hsing and Chien Yu Chin from Taipei, the winner of the Asian crown last month defeated Singapore’s Li Yujia and Jiang Yanmei 21-10,10-21, 21-18 for a second round ticket.
