Singapore - In the end it all came good for Ronald Susilo in the Aviva Singapore Open 2006 at the Singapore Indoor stadium last night.
The Singapore player, who celebrated his 27th birthday yesterday, defeated Malaysia's Kuan Beng Hong in their first round encounter in three games to book his place in the next round against Austria's Juergen Koch tonight.
It was a hard fought match, taking 50 minutes to complete. Ultimately, it was Susilo who won 21-16,18-21,21-16.
The pre-match prediction was in the Malaysian's favour for several reason. For one, he was a seeded player. Secondly, Susilo had not played top-flight competitive badminton for a long time since his Achilles heel operation eight months ago.
But Susilo started well last night and looked the more composed player as he took the first game 21-16. There was a fight back from Kuan, the quarter-finalist here two years ago, in the second set. However, when it came down to the crunch, Ronald was up to it and he went to carve out a 21-16 victory to book his place in the next round.
I am feeling a bit tired now. Beng Hong is a strong opponent but he made too many mistakes, said Ronald.
He plays Juergen next but as far as Ronald is concerned Koch is just another opponent.
To tell truth I don't know who I will play next. I only want to prepare myself well and give my best and hopefully qualify for the third round. That's my target, said Ronald.
There was also joy for Ronald's teammate Kendrick Lee who also booked his place in the next round.
Kendrick beat Taipei's Chin Sheng Ming 21-11,21-13 to book a place against China's Bao Chunlai, the recent Indonesian Open finalist in the second round tonight.
Singapore’s Women's Doubles pair Fu Mingtian and Yao Lei are also in the next round, having beaten the pair from the Philippines Paula Chan and Therine Chan 21-8,21-5.
The other Women’s Doubles showing was not as successful in their bid for the Aviva Open Singapore 2006 honor. Jiang Yanmei and Li Yujia lost to Taipei's No. 3 seed Cheng Wen Hsing and Chien Yu Chin 10-21,21-10,18-21.
Nonetheless, having defeated Indonesia’s Hendra Setiawan and Markis Kido (World Ranked 18) 21- 16, 21 - 16, Singapore’s Men’s Doubles team Hendry Saputra and Hendra Wijaya are still in the play.
