Sarawak hosts Malaysian Open for the second time

The Proton Malaysia Badminton Open, hosted by the Sarawak Badminton Association from June 13 to 18 for the second time with the first held in 1993. All the matches will use the Indoor Stadium at Petra Jaya in Kuching.

In the last tournament held 13 years ago, the singles champion was Ardy Wiranata of Indonesia who emerged champion while the doubles champion pair was also won by Indonesia with Rexy Mainaky and partner Ricky Subagia beating a Danish pair.

In this tournament which is a four-star billing, a total 20 countries including the top singles and doubles players from the badminton playing countries of the world are converging in Kuching to vie for the total US$150,000 prizes at stake.

The men‘s singles champion will win $9,000 with the runnerup $4,800. The men‘s doubles champion will win $8,640 and $4,800 for the runnerup.

For the women‘s singles champion will take home $8,280, the runnerup $3,960. The doubles winner will win $7,320 and the runnerup $4,800. The mixed doubles will follow the same amount in prize money as the women‘s doubles.

In the men‘s singles Lin Dan of China is top seeded followed by Lee Chong Wei, Peter Cade Christensen of Denmark (3/4), Lee Hyun Il of Korea (3/4), Kenneth Jonnasen of Denmark (5/8), Hafiz Muhammad Hashim of Malaysia (5/8), Chen Hong of China (5/8), Chen Jin of China (5/8), Kuan Beng Hong of Malaysia (9/16), Ng Wei of Hong Kong (9/16), Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand (9/16), Eric Pang of Holland (9/16), Joachim Persson of Denmark (9/16), Dicky Palyana of Netherlands.

In the women‘s singles, Zhang Ning of China top the seeding followed by Xie Xingfang also of China. The rest are Wang Chen of Hong Kong (3/4), Pi HongYan of France (3/4), Yao Jie of the Netherlands (5/8), Tracey Hallam of England (5/8), Jiang Yanjiao of China (5/8) and Juliane Schenk of Germany (5/8).

In the men‘s doubles, the top seeded pair Erik Jensen and Martin Hansen of Denmark followed by the second seeded pair of Fu Haifeng and Cai Lun of China. The rest of the seedings are: Choong Tan Fook/Lee Wan Wah of Malaysia (3/4), Koo Kien Kiet/Chan Chong Ming of Malaysia (3/4), Lin Woon Fui/Mohd Tazari Mohd Fairuzizuan of Malaysia (5/8), Jung Lee Sung/Lee Yong Dae of Korea (5/8) and Joko Riyadi/Hendra A Gunawan of Indonesia (5/8).

In the owmen‘s doubles Gao Ling and Huang Sui of China is top seeded pair followed by Korean pair of Lee Kyung Wong/Lee Hyo Jung which is second seeded. The rest are Chin Eei Hui/Wong Pei Thy of Malaysia (3/4), Thoungthongkam Saraipe/Jankrajangwong Salinee of Thailand (3/4), Nicola Grether/ Juliana Shenk of Germany (5/8) and Britta Andersen and Merie Schjoldager od Denmark (5/8).

The Proton Malaysian Open followed the 5-star Avivia Singapore Open and the Philippines Open.
