KUCHING, June 15 (Bernama) -- The men's individual defending champion, Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia appears to be on his way for a third Proton Malaysian Open win after having qualified for the quarter finals Thursday.
Chong Wei, who has won the event the last two years, swept aside Eric Pang of Holland 21-13,21-7 to book a place in the quarter final Thursday night and wil meet Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand Friday.
World number Lin Dan also qualified after beating Beryno Wong of Malaysia in straight sets 21-12, 21-14.
Also in the fray are Denmark's Peter Gade Christensen who beat Poompat Sapkulchananart of Thailand 21-15,21-16 and South Korea's Lee Hyun Il who brushed aside Ng Wei of Hong Kong 21-9,21-10.
Malaysia's Muhammad Roslin Hashim also made it after beating Hong Kong's Chan Yan Kit 21-17,21-12.
Players from 20 countries are competing in the open which offers prize money totalling US,000 (RM450,000). The premier badminton event which began Wednesday ends on Sunday.
